Homegrown - Bonny Twigg

Have you heard of Bonny Twigg? Because you need to.  Bunbury local and soon-to-be WAAPA graduate Bonny is definitely one to watch!  With her beautiful vocals, piano accompaniment and the use of a VoiceLive box, Bonny’s performance will have you hooked from start to finish.

This week, we sat down with Bonny to chat all things music!

How did you get you get started as a musician?
Music is something my mum always treasured, so both my brothers and myself started piano lessons at the age of 4. Music was always playing in our household and was something I loved from such a young age. My passion for singing only grew stronger as I grew older. I started vocal lessons at the age of 8, and have been singing ever since!

How would you describe your music?
I would describe my music as acoustic pop. I usually sing and accompany myself on piano, so my style is soft but strong. As you will see in my performance, I have recently started to write music on a voice live box, which allows me to create more sounds and depth.

Who is your musical idol? Is there anyone who inspires you or influences your sound?
This is a really tricky question ... I feel as if I am influenced by so many artists, and this changes daily depending on how I am feeling! I like to take different things from different artists and songs, and create a unique style that incorporates all of these aspects.

If you could invite three musicians to dinner who would they be and what would you serve?
The three musicians I would invite would be Ariana Grande, Rihanna and Jessica Mauboy. These are my selections because not only do I love their music, but I love what they stand for and the message they deliver. They're also three extremely strong women, and I love the empowerment that they show daily to women all around the world. I think I would serve a nice, hearty, warm meal - comfort food that would make us all feel great!

What is the one venue/festival/event you would love to perform at and why?
My dream performance would be at Coachella ... this is a festival that is extremely well known around the world. It showcases some of the worlds most talented musicians, and to be included in that would be an absolute dream come true!

What are your career highlights so far?
I am lucky enough to have had some amazing opportunities throughout my life. I will always be really grateful to my Mum and family, who did whatever they could to constantly provide me with incredible opportunities. I think my favourite highlight would be touring around London with my brother (who accompanied me on piano) in 2018. This experience was absolutely incredible, and to share it with my brother made it even more special.

What are your career goals as a musician?
I have so many goals and ideas that I would love to put in action! As well as continuing to perform, my next big goal that I want to accomplish is to set up a travelling music lesson and music therapy company. I believe music is such a powerful way to express emotion, and I would love to provide this opportunity to those who usually wouldn't have the chance to experience this.

What advice would you give to other aspiring musicians?
Follow you passion, and allow music to take you places. It is an industry where you need to have a thick skin. It does come with rejection, and at times, self-doubt, but if it is something you truly love then it is worth chasing! Music is a universal language, keep sharing it with people!

If you could be an accomplished musician on any instrument without a single lesson, what instrument would it be?
It would definitely be drums! Learning the drums has always been a secret goal of mine, and I hope one day to accomplish it!

What is your favourite thing about working in the WA music industry?
My favourite thing about working in the WA music industry is being surrounded by so many incredible artists. Western Australia has so much talent, and the more I work in the industry, the more I am learning about this. I have met and created music with some amazing artists in WA, and I look forward to doing this more so in the future!

Don't miss Bonny Twigg on Homegrown, 8pm Sunday 14 June on FacebookIGTV and YouTube.
