There’s a special buzz that falls over Perth once December rolls around. Whether it’s the long, lazy afternoons, the all-day barbecues, or the hot weather that makes the beach that much more inviting, there’s a unique vibe here that we absolutely love.
Here’s our guide for making the most of Christmas in Perth.
Christmas lights in Perth
Even in the warm weather, lighting the lights brings a certain magic to the air. Here’s where to find the best Christmas lights in Perth.
Rio Tinto Christmas Lights Trail
The Rio Tinto Christmas Lights Trail lights up the CBD from the end of December, with 22 stunning light installations spread throughout town. Starting at the 40-metre illuminated tunnel at Yagan Square, take a whimsical walk that takes you all across the city – or enjoy a shorter, family-friendly version dubbed the ‘merry mile’. Perth’s streetscapes, malls, and buildings come alive, and there are even some extra special interactive installations where you control the lights yourself!
The Rio Tinto Christmas Lights are a much-loved modern tradition, and the perfect way to explore the city.
Subiaco Twilight Trail
Just a short train ride from the city, Subiaco holds its own Twilight Trail. Featuring eight light-festooned large-scale installations, it adds a festive spark to your Subi experience.
Follow the Synergy Xmas Lights Trail
If you’re looking further afield, you can find pockets of festive magic spread throughout the Perth metro area.
Synergy sponsors a yearly Xmas Lights Trail, encouraging communities to come together and decorate their homes (with the chance of winning cash prizes). Their Lights Trail tracker shows you all the registered community trails, including individual houses.
It’s a cute exploration that helps you feel part of something bigger.
Mandurah Christmas Lights Trail
A little further south, the Mandurah canals come alive. Its residents take Christmas lights to the next level, with over 200 houses lit up with displays. The best way to see it is from the water, and you can book a tour from one of the local cruise operators.
Markets & gift-hunting opportunities
So there’s no better time than Christmas in Perth to get out and explore our range of markets. While firm favourites like the Subiaco Farmers Markets and the Scarborough Sunset Markets will no doubt have a festive spin, there’s plenty more to explore.
Perth City Farm Festive Markets
Perth City Farm is putting on its Festive Markets on Saturday, 20th December – just in time for the big day. Discover local gourmet foods and produce, and find mouth-watering additions to your Christmas lunch. There’s a small selection of local stallholders for local artisanal products, and even craft activities to try your hand at.
Summer X Salt Markets
Usually run every first and third Saturday of the month, the Summer X Salt beach markets are operating every Saturday in December in the lead-up to Christmas. Held at Clarko Reserve on the Trigg foreshore, they feature over 70 market stalls. Take a wander, and you’ll discover local artisans, creatives, food vendors, and small businesses – the ideal spot for last-minute Christmas shopping.
Open from 8am to 1pm, come down for a day of sun, sea air, and free activities.
