Whether it’s a first date, or one year in; a weekday date night with your spouse, or perhaps a catch-up with a visiting friend, and you want to show them the best Perth has to offer. However you want your date to go, it doesn’t always have to be over a coffee.
Here are our top picks for some of the more unique, fun date ideas for dates in Perth.
Stargazing at the Perth Observatory
Stargazing at the Perth Observatory allows you to see the heavens in even greater detail than you ever thought possible. Just a 50-minute drive outside of the city in Bickley, it’s one of those good date spots you’d kick yourself for never thinking of.
The Observatory runs a range of tours each day and evening, where you can explore the sky and learn about the stars. Gaze at the moon, see the nebulae, and discover the secrets of space and how they affect life on Earth.
Tours start at 30 minutes in length, and it’s probably one of the only places for dates where you can adopt a star together.
Tee Off at Holey Moley for a Playful Date Night
Looking for a date idea that’s lighthearted and just a little bit competitive? Holey Moley Mini Golf brings all the fun of mini golf, throws in a cocktail bar, and wraps it up in some gloriously over-the-top themed holes.
Located in Northbridge, Holey Moley is part mini golf course, part bar, part Instagram dream. Whether you’re putting through pop culture references, dodging quirky obstacles, or just trying to win bragging rights, it’s the perfect way to break the ice – or mix up your usual date night routine.
Add a cheeky cocktail or two from the bar, share a pizza, and you’ve got a night full of laughs, friendly banter, and maybe a few surprise hole-in-ones.
Stroll the markets
For a lost-cost date idea, hit up your local markets. They get you out and about, walking together, seeing what takes each other’s interest. And Perth has a fantastic selection of markets, good for any time of the year.
Subiaco Farmers Market
The Subiaco Farmers Market is a staple of Perth’s market scene. Browse rows of fresh fruit and vegetables from local producers; maybe even decide what you’ll cook together later. Buy some fresh flowers (don’t forget to make a note of their favourites), and grab a bite at one of the tantalising food stalls.
Held every Saturday from 8am to noon, it’s a lovely morning date idea.
Perth City Farm
Perth City Farm is an inner city farm that has rehabilitated an old industrial site into an environmental education centre. They hold markets every Saturday morning that focus on seasonal, organic produce, all grown by local producers.
It doesn’t get fresher than this. Browse the fruits and vegetables on offer, speak to the growers, grab a coffee and pastry from the on-site cafe (or a treat from one of the food trucks) and relax in the garden.
Conveniently located right next to the Claisebrook train station it’s one of the best places for dates where you can learn about the environment while buying locally-grown produce.
Open every Saturday morning:
7.30-11.30am (Dec – March)
8am – 12noon (April-Nov)
Scarborough Markets
Over the warmer summer months (Nov-April), take your date to the Sunset Markets at Scarborough Beach. Thursday evenings from 5pm, Scarb Sunset Markets have an electric atmosphere and cater to all: see families, groups of friends and plenty of couples on their date nights. Wind your way between the food stalls, grab a drink, and enjoy the buzz of the crowd as live music plays in the amphitheatre.
And over winter, the Scarborough Winter Markets provide a way to warm up together, with hot drinks, fire pits with roasting marshmallows, and hot food to keep things toasty. Held every Saturday from 3pm to 8pm between May and October, it’s one of our more cosy date ideas.
Note that the local car parks fill up quickly, so we recommend arriving early or giving yourself plenty of time to park. Alternatively, hop on public transport & enjoy the beachside pop-up bar!
Go on a sunset picnic
Although the sunset markets are great, sometimes all you want is to be able to relax and enjoy the beauty of a WA sunset together. The beautiful Perth climate—whether it’s our long, hot afternoons or temperate winters—lends itself to picnics. And a picnic at sunset is one of those perfect cosy date ideas.
Fish and chips on the grass overlooking Cottesloe Beach as the sun sets over the horizon is a magical Perth experience. Or pack a picnic and enjoy it on the lawn at Kings Park, overlooking the Perth skyline, as the sky in the distance fades into darkness.
The South Perth foreshore provides a different view of the city: enjoy a picnic on the grass with the setting sun reflected on the buildings and the glittering Swan River.
Lake Monger is somewhat of a hidden gem for sunset picnics. Take a leisurely stroll around the lake first, finish with a picnic on the gorgeous soft grass, as the setting sun reflects off the water, silhouetting the teeming birdlife.
At Sunset Hill in Scarborough, you can grab some takeaway and then watch as the sun slips down over the iconic Indian Ocean.
Release Your Creative Side
Get creative (and a little messy) at one of the local art studios. Get a little competitive and see who has the most artistic flair with a Paint and Sip class at Pinot & Picasso CBD or channel your inner Patrick Swayze or Demi Moore with a Pet Nat & Pottery Class at Studio P (Leederville). Spin the wheel, get your hands dirty, and shape something unique (and maybe slightly lopsided) to take home. It’s surprisingly therapeutic and perfect for a slower-paced date.
For a daytime alternative, join an introductory pottery class/ workshop, or visit your local craft store, get some air-dry clay or paints and canvases, and create your own arty pop-up. Attempt to perfect pinch pots or portraits of each other – alternatively, grab a blanket and head to one of our perfect picnic locations and paint the landscape together.
See a movie at Rooftop Cinema
Set in the heart of Northbridge on top of the Roe Street Carpark, the Perth CBD skyline provides the backdrop for a unique open-air cinema experience.
Lie back and relax in the beanbags and watch a range of blockbuster, classic, and cult favourite movies that grace the screen. There’s something on for everyone, plus a range of food, drinks, and cinema snacks available. But bring a blanket because it can get cold up there, even in summer.
While the season is currently closed, they’ll be announcing their 2025-26 program soon, and the curtains open again in October. Stay tuned for the 2025-26 line-up announcement!
