There’s something special about sunsets. Whether it’s the end of a roasting summer’s day, the crisp chill of an autumn evening, or watching dark rain clouds painted with oranges and reds, they’re a phenomenon that makes us all pause for a while, no matter where we are or what we’re doing.
In Perth, with our reasonably flat land, we’re lucky to get some truly spectacular views. Here are our top spots to watch the sunset in Perth.
Staying inland
Despite being a city near the water, there are some beautiful inland places to catch a sunset in Perth. They’re the types of places where you’ll feel like packing a picnic, throwing down a rug, and watching as the vibrant orange hues take over the sky.
Kings Park and Botanic Garden
It doesn’t get more Perth than catching the sunset at Kings Park. The elevated view from Mt Eliza looks out across Swan River and across the city skyline, the buildings glimmering as the sun sinks lower.
There are plenty of places and lookouts to watch the sunset from in Kings Park, and with its green open lawns, you’re spoiled for choice. Be aware, though, as it can get busy, so make sure you arrive early to find a good spot.
Reabold Hill Lookout
Surrounded by green trees and bushland, Reabold Hill Lookout in Bold Park is a truly special place to watch the sunset in Perth. And of course, the views are spectacular: it’s the city’s highest point. At 85 metres above sea level, Reabold Hill provides 360-degree views, looking out over both the city and the ocean.
There’s a short walk to get to the top, but it’s worth it. And being a little removed from the main sunset spots it’s often quiet—a bonus for nature-lovers.
Lions Lookout
Lions Lookout in Lesmurdie is perched on the edge of a cliff, and the panoramic views out over the Swan Coastal Plain, with the city skyline in the distance, are stunning.
You can drive up, park your car in the carpark, and watch the sunset without even leaving your vehicle—but standing in the breeze, breathing in the hillside air, is so much more rewarding.
There’s a 4km walk attached, too, which takes you through some gorgeous bushland that’s made even more striking as the light gets lower. While it’s a reasonably short trail, it helps to make the view itself feel like an achievement. Zig Zag Scenic Drive
Zig Zag Scenic Drive is one of Perth’s favourite spots to catch a sunset. Just a half-hour drive from the CBD, the road winds around Gooseberry Hill, providing expansive views out over the whole city.
The road is open to cars from 11:00am – 8:30pm, offering a one-way shared space. Driving down at sunset, the skyline comes in and out of view between the trees, which can be magical. Otherwise, do what many others will be doing, and pull over and watch it from the side of the road.
Watch the Perth sunset by the water
In Perth, we get the pleasure of watching the sun dip over the horizon into the Indian Ocean. It’s a striking view, wherever you’re located on the coast, but there are some spots that make it extra special.
Cottesloe Beach
It doesn’t get more iconic than the sun setting over the horizon at Cottesloe Beach. Wherever you are on the beach, it’s guaranteed to be gorgeous. A dip in the water at sunset is truly exhilarating, or grab some fish and chips and eat on the grass as the breeze rolls in: it’s a quintessential Western Australian experience
City Beach
The wide, white expanse of City Beach makes for beautiful sunset conditions, with the dunes providing a slightly elevated view. You can watch the sunset from the beach itself, or grab a drink and a meal at one of the restaurants nestled above the sand. But be warned, it can get windy on occasion.
Scarborough Beach
While parking can get crowded, the sunset views at Scarborough Beach are simply beautiful. And it’s an experience made even better by the abundance of food available. Grab some takeaway and bring it down to the beach, perch on the expansive grass space of the aptly-named Sunset Hill, or sit in comfort at one of the many bars, pubs, and restaurants, and enjoy a drink as the sun goes down.
Watermans Bay
Watermans Bay, a bit further north up the coast, is a beautiful spot to go for a quiet swim at sunset. With its more tranquil waters and fewer crowds, it’s a peaceful place, and you can’t go past watching the sun slip into the ocean while you float in the swell.
Laze on the grass, go for a swim, or enjoy a barbecue—it’s a great place to catch Perth’s sunsets, without feeling like you’re sharing it.
Matilda Bay Reserve
Matilda Bay Reserve looks out over the Swan River and back towards the city, the Perth skyline standing tall in the distance. It’s a beautifully laid-back place to enjoy a sunset, surrounded by leafy trees and the lapping of the water on the shore.
Arrive early to secure a peaceful spot on the riverbank. But be warned: you may share it with the resident black swan population, and sometimes even a pod of dolphins that plays further out in the river.
Point Resolution
Point Resolution juts out into the waters of Swan River, providing a different view to those looking back over the city. The Reserve faces west, so you can watch the changing colours of the sky, with the vibrant reds, oranges, and purples reflected in the water.
It’s a natural, peaceful space, perfect for families. But it can be a popular spot for locals on the weekend, so be sure to get there early.
